Venice is composed of 120 small islands linked by 455 bridges, if we include the islands of Murano and Burano.1 As such, the city is made up of 118 islands connected by 354 bridges and divided by 177 rivers and canals. You get to Venice from the mainland by the Liberty Bridge, which accesses the Piazzale Roma.
Since its founding, the city has suffered from periodic flooding. Today the city faces a serious threat by repeated flooding. In spring and autumn takes place called acqua alta (high tide), twice a day, completely flooding the Plaza de San Marcos. The Italian government is preparing a project called "MOSE" (Modulo Sperimentale elettromeccanico), mobile lifting levees would be closed if the water level rise from the sea.
